MICHAEL

MICHAEL. Anytime I would take a walk round campus,
It makes me think of a lot of things.
People from all walks of life crowded
In a deep den for a higher education to do what?
To bring a poor underdeveloped nation
From it present humiliating predicament?
To help accomplish the noble work,
Or simply ride in a plush car,
Own a splendid mansion,
Put on coat and tie and sit in
A prison called office and sweats one’s humanity away.
Be indifferent to the piteous
Plight and woes of the common people with less education
I think the former has validity.
Salvation must reside in education.
Education must have impact in
Our psyche, consciousness and our culture.
The very fabric of our society must be
Affected positively by education.
And not the other way round.
Black faces in wigs and gowns
And ties and miniskirts and trousers
Running away from filthy uncivilized people.
I am forced to laugh and commiserate some
of my friends who go out in the night to chill and enjoy.
Reveling and partying with the ladies
Invoking father Bacchus in his fiery chariot
Of wine to bless them as they engaged in debauchery and profligacy
And would dare say to the serious and somber.
My friend why, are you philosophizing
Or simply practicing asceticism.
Cheer up, let us go and revel life is but enjoyment,
Life is short and you must not relegate the little
Time given to sorrow and wear away. I
Feel like weeping when I see boys
Betraying their dreams, ambitions, and responsibilities.
