HERCULES AND HERA, PERSEUS AND POSEIDON, CERBERUS AND CENTAUR - MYTHS AND MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES ON CAMPUS.

In mans greatest intellectual age sometimes called mythopoeia, he gave eyes to trees, ears to rocks and mouths to the seas. It was the era of the humanism of animism. Where humankind invoked the gods of above for intervention in every aspect of life. Natural occurrences and phenomena were attributed to the gods and the servitors of the imaginary and exaggerated powers of the gods lived in perpetual fear of the unknown. Later, it lead to the believe in magic proper and witchcraft, sorcery and phallic worship, demonology, ghosts and hauntings, werewolves, ghouls, vampires etc

The beliefs, myths and legends of the various religious groups of the world were gradually, subtly and imperceptibly woven almost simultaneously together making these terrible creatures of the mind a reality.

Even though education and enlightenment has gain ground and the majority are now immersed in scientific knowledge, the fear of the unknown and the crude myths of the ancients still have strong and devoted adherents. While the modern day man bent on a materialist quest and intellectually gifted would reduce such creatures to the realm of superstition, the simple are poised to justify the existence of such creatures with astonishing evidence which is baffling.

When I first entered the university, I was fully convinced that it is a modernist institution unconnected with any trifling idealism but concerned with serious academic work and issues of intellectual significance and the education of the highest and sublime nature. Indeed, I saw the great institution as an ideal place for the dissipation of superstitions, false beliefs, myths modern and ancient and crude mystification.

I was soon disillusioned and was violently jostled from my fanciful day dreaming. For the red roof tiles and the solemn buildings and the prim towers of the premier university harbors more myths than the inventors of vampires and Cerberus.

Yet, one interesting thing about the obnoxious myths and mythology whirling on campus are far more modern than the one conjured by Kafka and James Joyce.

When I first disclosed it to my good friend that I am burdened by the myths, wrong notions, false perceptions and prejudices on campus, he thought I was about to reveal a dark secret a about a strange, unusual lecturer on campus who is feared and revered by all. Who’s eccentricities and almost Mephistopheles manner exudes nothing but that of a gifted and brilliant educationist who has traded his soul to the devil for special gifts of the mind.

I told my friend that such notions about personalities do not even correspond to the notion of myths. He was apt to bring to the fore the various cults groups on campus.

I can see that you have falling into the quagmire of nihilism and materialism. My friend said in a manner synonymous to a preacher warning his flocks of the apocalypse and the ever looming presence of the prince of darkness. You seem not to belief in anything again since you started reading some of the vicious subjects. Things are really happening which when revealed to you, you would give up your unnecessary pursuit of the so called practical science of yours which needs every bit of evidence before it belief in something. I am some one who doesn’t dispute the existence of spirits who can equally cause havoc and can create. It is something for ancient of days having being in existence and with my scant academic foundation. Walk like one hypnotized the challenge the very powers of the gods.

Here on campus, there are so many things happening that unless one has spiritual insight would judge as natural but may be one of the unnatural things that can occur in the natural world. I have interacted with some of the students who are into cults and fraternities. And I had my fill. The very devil is said to be invoked on campus for special favor. People want to excel academically and they will do anything to achieve their aim. Everyone and what he believes in. if you have lost faith in your god and have drifted from their protection, some are eagerly clutching theirs for protection and powers. You may see the buildings, you may see the students, you may see the lecturers, everyone has his spiritual source.

Some of the modern myths that the learning towers harbor is that Legon is the realization and culmination of all aspirations. For it is incumbent on all students to preach the gospel of Legon to all and sundry. It is a duty of every student to shout and ululate to the world that he is a member of that covetous institution and must be given the highest respect. Once a member of the premier university, your dressing, mannerism, gait and poise and ones manner of speaking must distinctly show that you are receiving a superior knowledge.

When you engage in conversation with a university student, prepare to retch, for there would be a surfeit of the word campus. Every sentence that the students would utter would begin with on campus. There would so much references and allusions to the maxims, aphorisms and anecdotes of unknown lecturers and professors. My lecturer says this and that and the simple and unquestioning masses listen to their heroes of the golden campus with awe and admiration.

He would throw a challenge to everyone. I am a psychology student and I know more of the human mind than any one of you. I understand the political situation of this country more than any one else because I am a political science student. We are always bombarded by phrases, hints, clues of weird nature to show the level of a person walking on campus.

People looked at the forte they have achieved, that is gaining admission to the university and revere that more than what they can use the university education they are receiving to help this nation of ours of woes and tribulations.

It is on record that Legon is one of the greatest institutions of higher education. It is recognized internationally and accorded a great respect. However, it is not on record that Legon has solved the most pressing and debilitating problems of this country.

Education is rapidly sinking into the pantheon of people who really know nothing about the real meaning of what enlightenment is all about.

It is about time we reverberate the dreamers and mythmakers from their drunken stupor and educate them about what education proper is. For they have being misadjusted for far too long. This is the hour we have ululate to those strolling on campus with there gaudy and pompous mentality of fashion. It is about time we send out a clarion call to every one, every student that the premier university is an institution bent instilling and imbibing higher knowledge to serious students and those who walk around with fanciful conviction that the institution is there to help them create their vicious inimical myths, personal aggrandizement, self esteem and their success in life but not that of the community have falling short of the ideals that the learning towers projects.

My friend was overwhelmed by what he termed my philosophical lectures. He said. I now know so many cogent and reasonable arguments propounded to fall into the morass of modern myths. I now know that is not only Hercules and Hera, Perseus and Poseidon, Cerberus and centaur who are mythological creatures, but many people on campus who walk, talk and eat to be mythological creatures also.
